Chim achukma? Sv hohchifo yvt, Cheyenne Sparks. I am a wife, mother of two and registered artist with my tribe, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. I have a passion for spreading joy through both modern and traditional beadwork and I am always looking for new ways to share my culture. I am a reconnecting native - while my family has always known and respected their heritage, they did so at arm’s length in order to protect themselves. My grandmother had so much knowledge that was never shared for fear. I am blessed that I get to now share that knowledge with PRIDE. I began beading in 2010 as a young woman looking for a way to connect to my culture, family and self. I minored in American Indian Studies at Oklahoma State University where I joined the Native American Student Association as a freshman and was instantly in awe of everyone’s beadwork that they wore so openly. As I had no one to teach me, I began recreating techniques I saw in images and in person. It was hard to learn alone, but so worth it. Beadwork has taken me on so many adventures since then! A child of the JOM Program, I now have the opportunity to go into schools and teach beadwork and cultural practices to students and parents. During COVID, I found joy in sharing bead lessons, tips and tricks on TikTok and have taught virtual zoom classes to universities and organizations. In 2023, I graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Law with a Masters of Legal Studies in Indigenous People’s Law. This experience has given me the further knowledge I needed to be an advocate for my community both in and out of the courthouse. What brings me the utmost joy is being able to be the person for others that I so desperately needed myself.
